Ellen returned to her home county of Derbyshire today (10/09/06) as she
joined hundreds of people at Carsington Water, to support The Ellen
MacArthur Trust and the locally run Rainbow’s hospice.
Ellen,
local volunteers and members of Derbyshire Building Society were aiming
to raise awareness of the work done by both charities and encourage
people to open an Ellen MacArthur Trust and Rainbow’s affinity savings
account. For every one hundred pounds that is placed in an account, one
pound will be donated to the charities.
“It really does supply a very welcome regular income for both of the charities,” commented Ellen MacArthur Trust Manager Frank Fletcher, who joined Ellen on the day. “We
cannot thank everyone enough for all their support today and for the
continued support of people throughout the county. We take children
from all over the UK on the sailing trips, including London,
Southampton and Northern Ireland. But we have also been working closely
with the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, taking over thirty-five
children from the Derbyshire area out sailing over the last three
years.”
Ellen was also on hand to receive a cheque from
a Rotary International on behalf of Derbyshire Youth Sailing for the
new boat loan scheme being launched next year. The Rotary International
Cheque included a youth grant from the Rotary Club of Wirksworth as
well as a matching Rotary International District Grant and totalled to
£1500. The money is intended to help provide racing standard boats for
affordable leasing to young Derbyshire sailors who are in need of a
more competitive boat.
There were many fundraising events
taking place, including a raft race out on the reservoir, including a
last minute joint entry by Ellen, The Ellen MacArthur Trust and
Rainbows Hospice. Twelve teams took to the water in three-by-two metre
rafts, over a 500-metre course on the water. After a very competitive
first few heats, Ellen’s team made the final, eventually finishing on
the podium in third place. “It was fantastic day and it is great
to be back in Derbyshire and to see this centre being so well used by
the local community," said Ellen. "The affinity account
is a fantastic way to support these two charities, and I’d like to
thank all the volunteers and staff who have taken the time to come here
and make this day such a success.”
Ellen will also be
visiting some local branches of the Derbyshire Building Society on
Monday (11/09/06), meeting employees and local school children.
