Dan Monk arrives in Hawaii

We are delighted to announce our Ellen MacArthur Trust Ambassador, Dan Monk, has just arrived in Hawaii and is preparing to rejoin the Clipper Round the World Race for its last stages before returning back in the UK in July.

Dan, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2001, first sailed with The Ellen MacArthur Trust in 2003 for a four-day yacht trip in The Solent.  It was clear from the very beginning that Dan had a passion for the sea, and year after year Dan returned to join The Trust’s summer activities.  After a relapse in 2005 Dan decided that he wanted to become more involved in the sailing industry, and with the support of The Trust and The United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA) he took on the Professional Yachtmaster course, successfully qualifying May 2007.  After speaking about his dream of sailing around the world at 2007 The Ellen MacArthur Trust Ball, Dan was offered a place on the 07/08 Clipper Round the World Race. With the support of the Trust, JPMorgan Asset Management and The Phillip Green Memorial Trust Dan set sail from Liverpool in September 07 and headed off around the world to live his dream.

After sailing to Brazil and South Africa, Dan temporarily left the race in December on the advice of his doctor when he began to feel fatigued.  Dan returned to the UK for a full check up and after a restful break, regular fitness training and dietary advice, Dan felt he was able to continue his voyage.  With the full support of his doctors Dan flew out to Hawaii on the 1st April and is looking forward to catching up with the some of the crew he had already sailed with.

Dan will spend the next few months sailing first to Santa Cruz, then through the Panama Canal to the port of Jamaica.  Following this, he will visit New York, Nova Scotia, take a pit stop in Cork and finally return to where it all began in Liverpool later this summer.

The Hawaii to Santa Cruz leg of the race sets off in the next few days, and once Dan is racing again you will be able to read regular updates of his progress here.  You can also follow the race on the Clipper Round the World website.
