“He was elated when he came back but even now we see little positive differences in his day to day attitude."

Ellen MacArthur Trust Ambassador Dan Monk returns to Durban

After speaking to Dan on the satellite phone this morning Ellen MacArthur said: "Dan seemed in good spirits, but obviously sad that he would be leaving the boat. It has been a tough decision and not one which Dan has taken lightly. Due to this being the hardest leg of the race, and the fact that he has struggled on the previous leg with fatigue and a significant wisdom tooth infection he has chosen to leave the boat with this lift. He needs to return to the UK to see his doctors, and assess his situation.”

Dan was given consent to race from UCLH (University College London Hospital) haematology department. Upon returning to the UK Dan will attend a  medical check-up with UCLH, and a decision on the remaining legs of the race will be taken.

"Dan has taken on an epic challenge, and completed the first two legs of the race, since starting the race in September. I know this would have been a hard decision for Dan to make, but he knows his health better than most people. Everyone at The Trust sends this best wishes and support to him and hopes that he will take the time to rest and recover over Christmas." Frank Fletcher - Manager, Ellen MacArthur Trust
