One amazing week draws to a close...

The second year as the official charity for Skandia Cowes Week is drawing to a close for The Ellen MacArthur Trust. The charity has had overwhelming support form everyone involved in Skandia Cowes Week 2007 and we cannot thank everyone enough.

After all of the fundraising activities throughout the week, including The Trust Ball, Skandia Ball and The stand on the parade, the current total stands at an amazing £107, 695! The charity could not have believed that the total could have been matched or even beaten after the £90,000 total form 2006, these funds will allow the charity to work with new hospitals all over the UK and take children sailing.

One of the most popular activities on the stand was the opportunity to take on the professionals and try to beat times set on a sailing simulator by the likes of Ellen MacArthur and Shirley Robertson, many thanks to Indoor Sailing for arranging for the simulator to be at the stand during Cowes Week. At present the top time of 01:58:06 was set by Robbie (12), a Cowes resident and avid laser sailor at Gurnard Sailing Club.

The crews onboard the Ellen MacArthur Trust boat Scarlet Oyster have had a great week, the kids all aged between 14- 16, some of which have never sailed before, have been racing in IRC Class 5 and maintaining a respectable place in the second half of the fleet all week. Due to the conditions over the latter part of the week the sailing and racing has taken a back seat to the water bombing campaign that has been witnessed on the Solent waters!

The crew onboard Scarlet Oyster soon gained a reputation as the "naughtiest" boat in the fleet, attacking unsuspecting sailors with an avalanche of water balloons where-ever possible. Even Trust patron Shirley Robertson, who joined the children on Monday 6th August joined in. After many direct hits, the other boats cottoned onto their antics and full blown water balloon fights have been occurring between the class all week. After a shortage of ammo mid-week The Trust crew soon found a new supply and are proud to announce that a suspected 3000 water balloons have been distributed in the last seven days.

Ellen MacArthur Trust Patron said, “Everyone involved in The Ellen MacArthur Trust has put in a magnificent effort this week to help us raise just over £107,000. We have been overwhelmed not only by the amount of money raised, but also by the interest and support for The Trust from people who weren’t aware of us before this week. We have had 11 children down to race with us all week and for some who have never sailed before, they have had a great experience and more importantly a lot of fun. The money raised from this week will allow us to expand even more, working with new hospitals and taking more children from all over the UK out sailing in the future. To break the £100,000 mark is totally overwhelming and I can't even begin to thank everyone for their support throughout this week".
