Day One: Skandia Cowes Week 2007

Day One - Skandia Cowes Week 2007

On the water:

The summer has returned to Cowes on the Isle of Wight as perfect sailing conditions were found on the water. With temperatures hitting the high 20’s and The Ellen MacArthur Trust kicked off their first day out on the water with four children racing onboard the 48-foot monohull Scarlet Oyster in IRC Class 5.

Racing started at 1100, whilst the crew had a slow start, they soon found a rhythm onboard taking a mid fleet position by the first beat and holding their position as they headed downwind. The crew were faced with a long course, and some tricky conditions as the day went on they found themselves further sdown the fleet. Once across the finish line the crew reported good spiritis onboard and were happy with their first day out racing, with six days racing remaining, it has been a fantastic start to the week. Scarlet Oyster finished 42nd out of 52 in the fleet on day one of racing.

Luke from the Isle of Wight:

“It was a great first day for us out on the water. This is my first Skandia Cowes Week and also the first for many of the crew onboard, so being on the start line racing with a class of over 50 boats was amazing. The course was very long, but we are still getting to know our boat and we held our position for much of the race. I can’t wait to get back out there tomorrow and hopefully improve on our position overall”.

On land:

The warm and sunny conditions made for a great day on land for the spectators and everyone who has been supporting The Ellen MacArthur Trust, by visiting their stand or taking part in the “Text to Win” competition. The stand was busy all day as people tested their skill on the sailing simulator trying to get their time on the leader board. Trust patron Ellen MacArthur stopped in to set the best time so far for the “Star in a reasonably priced dinghy” competition. Other notable sailors such as round the world record breaker Dee Caffari and Trust patron (double Olympic gold medallist) Shirley Robertson will be stopping by this weekend to see if they can knock Ellen off the top spot!

This year The Trust has joined forces with Island-based skincare specialists and Skandia Cowes Week skincare sponsor Liz Earle. Ellen MacArthur Trust lanyards with Liz Earle sunscreen SPF 25 are available to buy from the stand for £5.00 with all proceeds kindly donated to The Trust. Raffle tickets will also be on sale with the chance to sail onboard one of the most exciting boats racing at this year’s regatta, the Extreme 40. At 40-foot long, these lightweight carbon fibre catamarans can reach exhilarating speeds of up to 40 knots (just under 50 miles per hour). For more information visit The Ellen MacArthur Trust stand located on Cowes Parade, open from 10am until 8pm each day,
