The final countdown has begun.......

The final countdown has begun in 2 days 10 young people in recovery from Cancer and Leukaemia will take part in the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, one of the world's largest and most famous yachting races, which takes place in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England with 1799 boats are taking part this year.

The young people onboard Scarlet Oyster (a 48ft Oyster) and Spirit (a 38ft broadblue catamaran) have all previously sailed with The Trust and come from all over the UK. The Trust aims to support children and young people until they reach remission and inviting them back to take part in events such the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race as part of an overall support plan. Last year Scarlet Oyster was helmed solely by the young people onboard, from the first starting gun to the finish line, the young crew managed to beat one of the fastest boats in the fleet, Chernikeff 2, on which Ellen was a guest for the day.

Daniel Monk and Katie Miller will also be competing onboard her 21 -foot Corribee "Elecktra". Daniel was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2002 and joined The Trust on their first trip in 2003. In 2005 Daniel sailed with The Trust for the Round the Island Race, two days before the start he discovered his leukaemia had returned and he needed a bone marrow transplant. One of his main motivations during his treatment was to return in 2006 to race and complete the 55-mile course. He succeeded, finishing the course in the top third Through support from The Ellen MacArthur Trust, Daniel has since completed a Commercial Yachtmaster     course at UKSA, and is aiming to work with The Trust as a skipper in the future. Katie Miller, a Trust volunteer and also the recent recipient of the Raymarine Young Sailor of the Year award will join Daniel on the water after following in Ellen MacArthur's footsteps and sailing around Britain in order to raise funds for The Trust.

As well as the ten young people onboard Scarlet Oyster, Spirit, and Dan and Katie onboard Elecktra The Ellen MacArthur Trust have teams of walkers and cyclists attempting to circumnavigate the Island. Thirty cyclist from JPMorgan Bournemouth office have raised over £4,000 and 11 Cyclist from MGM assurance will be riding a circular route around the island. The cyclists, walkers and Trust yachts are all competing under The Team Ellen MacArthur Trust Banner if you would like to sponsor them please click here

You can follow the action on the day as the yachts, cyclists and walkers will all have OC Trackers fitted to allow people to have a virtual link to hear progress which will be available to view through The Trust's website.
